Your Test Day Guide
A no-nonsense walkthrough of what actually happens on the day — so there are zero surprises.
Prepare with The CitizenTest
Run through the practice tests on The CitizenTest and you'll see everything that could pop up on the real exam — no need to read the entire Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond booklet cover to cover. Seriously, it'll save you heaps of time.
Want to be extra thorough? Give Section 4 — Australian Values in the booklet another read. You need to get all 5 values questions right on the real test, so it's worth knowing them inside out. That said, if you've smashed the practice tests you'll be fine — the test is pretty straightforward.
What to Bring
Check your appointment letter or email — it'll tell you exactly what to bring. Usually it's just a valid photo ID like a driver's licence. Quick check the night before and you're sorted.
Arriving at Your Appointment
Your appointment will be at a Department of Home Affairs office. These buildings are keycard-secured, so you can't just walk in — look for the client entrance (it's signposted) and hang tight outside.
Rocking up 5–10 minutes early is the sweet spot. Any earlier and you'll just be standing around — there's nowhere to wait inside.
Getting Inside
A few minutes before your appointment, staff will open the door from the inside and get everyone lined up by appointment time.
They'll call people in a small group at a time, so don't stress if you're not first through the door.
Check-In
Once you're in, you'll be pointed to a self-service kiosk. Scan the barcode in the top-right corner of your appointment letter (have it ready on your phone or printed out).
It'll print a receipt with your queue number and where to go next. Head through the turnstile and follow the signs to the waiting area — easy.
The Waiting Room
Grab a seat and listen for your queue number over the speakers. When it's called, they'll also announce a desk number— that's where you're headed. The announcements are nice and clear so you won't miss it.
At the Desk
The officer will check your ID, confirm your details, and snap a quick photo. If there's anything extra needed for your application, they'll ask here. Then you'll get a piece of paper with your test ID number— that's your ticket to the test.
Taking the Test
Head to the testing area, show your test ID, and you'll be sat down at a computer.
Punch in your test ID and away you go — 20 multiple-choice questions. If you've been practising on The CitizenTest, this will feel like second nature.
Once you submit the last question, raise your hand and sit tight.
You Passed! Congrats!
You'll get your result on the spot — no anxious waiting. They'll hand you a sheet with info about the next steps (ceremony and pledge details).
After that, just retrace your steps — back to the waiting room, elevator down, out through the exit turnstiles, and you're back on the street as a soon-to-be citizen. Legend.
